Alma Sierra Andrews Macy
Alma was born in Fresno,
California on December 24, 1893. She was
the youngest child of Celso and Annie Sierra.
She attended schools in Fresno and was raised a Catholic.
The family moved to Turlock
and lived in a home that could be the home that Charles Schuppert bought for
his stepson, Celso. After finishing
school, Alma went to San Francisco to work.
She became a telephone operator and met Emma who was also a telephone
operator. They became close friends and
eventually Alma introduced Carl Sierra, her brother, to Emma Stohler.
Alma met Thomas Andrews and
they married January 1914 in Berkeley, California. They had a girl, Helen, born in Berkeley on
October 4, 1914 and a boy, Walter, born in Berkeley on February 22, 1916. Tom and Alma were divorced in 1927 or
1928. It was a friendly divorce and
Thomas was with his children every minute he didn't work as a Captain in the
fire department. He was a devoted father
and a very considerate man.
I remember during the late
1920's, Aunt Alma bought a beautiful green Willie's Knight automobile. It was very outstanding as all cars were navy
blue or black in the early years. And
the most fascinating thing of all is when Alma went and bought a wide brimmed
hat in the exact shade of green as the Willie's Knight,
Alma had some interesting
jobs other than being a telephone operator she was a receptionist to different
big companies, a head chef of salads on the Cunard Lines sailing all around the
world. She was a traveling companion to
Carrie Jacob's Bond who was a songwriter.
Her most famous being, "I Love You Truly," "A Perfect
Day," and "Just a-Wearying' for you." She also wrote books for children and an
autobiography.
Alma met Woodruff (Woody) Macy in the early 1930's. They did a lot of traveling all over the
United States and around the world.
Woody was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He loved Alma very much and would do anything
for her. Woody and Alma married May 10,
in 1931 or 1932 in Reno Nevada. Woody
was born November 18, 1890. He died in
San Diego on January 1969 and interred at Cypress View Mausoleum.
Alma continued to live in
San Diego after Woody died. Alma died in
San Diego on January 5, 1988 just twelve days after her 95Th. Birthday. Interred at Cypress View Mausoleum, San
Diego.
I remember Aunt Alma always
wore high heels and wore very attractive clothes. She loved parties and having
a good time. I also remember that when
she told about an incident happening she would exaggerate and make it far more
interesting than it actually was. I also
remember that Alma and her brother Carl didn't speak to each other for
years. Right before their mother, Annie,
died she made them promise to break this silence. They did speak but didn't become friendly until
many years passed. No one ever mentioned
the reason.
