Anna Amanda Patton Phelps

Anna Amanda Patton Phelps

Anna Amanda Patton was born in Tennessee in 1826.  She married William H. Phelps who was also born in Tennessee.  This union brought four sons and one daughter.  W.H. Phelps was the oldest son and I have found no record of the other boys except a newspaper article, which stated that three sons resided in different parts of Missouri and Kansas at the time of Anna's death.  The daughter was named after her mother and called "Annie".

According to information given to me many years ago by my mother,  "Annie" moved from Sedalia by covered wagon in the late 1870's or early 1880.  Her mother, Anna and brother were with her.  They moved west to California.  The governor of Missouri was John J. Phelps (1877-1881) who was related to the father of Annie.  W.H. Jr. was selling liquor to the Indians, which was illegal, and to save the governor's reputation was the reason for leaving Missouri.  There is no record of W.H. Sr. and. it is assumed he died before the trip west by covered wagon.

They lived in Sansevaine in Southern California.  Anna died of cancer here in 1892 at the age of 66.  She is interred at Colton Cemetery in Southern California.  Her grandson, Carl Sierra Sr. purchased a tombstone for her grave in the late 1920's.  I was there at this time and have a picture of the tombstone, which reads, "AMANDE PHELPS, MOTHER, DIED, 1892."

According to old post cards I have that were in the family, W.H. Jr. called Henry, moved to Raymond, California, which is in the foothills of the Sierra Mts. and northeast of Fresno.  He married Delila called "Lila" and according to the post cards, Louis, Roy, Alma, Stella and Anna could all be the names of his children.
